What is Classroom Gamification?
Classroom Gamification is simply the use of game design in the classroom. It is nothing new in the business world. Companies like Microsoft, Google, Cisco, and even Ford have been using this idea for years and all have reported increases in motivation and productivity. I use it in my class to increase motivation, team work, participation, and grades while decreasing off task behavior and give consequences to those students not performing the way they should.
Experience Points
Students will earn Experience Points (XP) in class when they are on task, turn assignments in on time, work well in teams, doing well on a particular test, or any other positive achievement. This is all completely customizable by the teacher or you can use the default settings. Health Points
Students can lose Health Points (HP) when they fail to do something in class or misbehave. This can range from not doing their homework to calling out or being disruptive. If they lose all of their HP, they will have to face a consequence in the game. These regenerate daily by 2. Super Powers
When students level up and learn super powers, they will be able to use them in class. These super powers will help them in class. The super powers in my classroom range from being able to eat or listen to music while working or using cheat sheets on tests or asking the game master questions. |
Action Points
Students can earn Action Points (AP) when they earn enough Experience Points (XP). These are used to achieve rewards and earn super powers. These super powers can help them on tests, eat in class, listen to their favorite music during independent work, etc. Leveling Up
Upon earning enough Experience Points, determined by the teacher, students will level up. This is similar to beating a level in a video game. Every time they level up, they will earn a green hand in which they can use to buy new super powers to help them out in the classroom. Gold Points
Students can earn Gold Points when they level up, doing something awesome in class, train pets, win Boss Battles, or even doing chores at home! These gold points are like money inside the game. They will use these points to purchase new armor, pets, and other upgrades. |
Classcraft Features
Daily Random Events
Random Events can either benefit or hinder your classroom in a good way. Students love these. They can be things like everyone gains XP for the day, no one can lose HP for the day, or even trivia for GP or XP. These are also completely customizable to fit your classroom needs. You don't have to use these every day. Most weeks, I use them once to twice, but the students really enjoy them.

Classroom Content
Classcraft is also a gret Learning Management System (LMS). You can upload links, documents, and other handouts inside of Classcraft for students to access. Furthermore, you can make assignments for your class to complete and have it automatically award them XP and GP for completing the assignment. You can give incentives for groups to complete assignments early and on time.
|
Gradebook
You can import your grades for assignments into Classcraft so students can be awarded experience points based on their score. In my classroom, I award them 5 points for for every percentage point about 70%. For example, if a student earns a 100%, they would recieve 150 XP for their test score. You can also set it to take away HP if they get below 70%, but I choose not to use that option.
